What is PRP Hair Restoration?

PRP hair restoration uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) naturally sourced from the blood to stimulate hair growth. Platelet-rich plasma injections contain a wealth of wound healing and growth factors that stimulate damaged hair follicles for hair regrowth. PRP injections also stimulate the production of collagen, a protein in the skin that is important for tissue regeneration. Collagen can improve scalp health and aid in natural hair growth to improve hair thinning.

Who is a Candidate for PRP Hair Restoration?

PRP hair treatment can treat male pattern baldness, female pattern baldness, and thinning hair. Since PRP therapy is naturally derived from the patient’s own blood, there is practically no risk of an allergic reaction and almost anyone is a candidate. Patients with complete baldness should consider other treatments since PRP is intended to stimulate hair growth from existing hair follicles. To determine if you’re a good candidate for PRP Hair Restoration, schedule a consultation with us.

The PRP Hair Restoration Treatment

PRP hair restoration is a three-step treatment that starts with a blood draw in our office. The patient’s blood will be spun in a centrifuge to separate the PRP from other blood components like red blood cells and blood proteins. Next, several injections of PRP will be placed in the thinning patches of hair. These injections only take a few minutes and are minimally painful, but the entire procedure takes about one hour.

Recovery After PRP Hair Restoration

After PRP treatment, mild bruising, swelling, and discomfort around the injection sites are common but these effects will subside within a few days. To limit the amount of swelling and bruising that occurs, patients should avoid strenuous activity and direct sun exposure or heat for a few days. Use gentle hair products and carefully clean the hair to avoid rubbing the injection sites and damaging the treated hair follicle.

How Long Will Results Last After PRP Hair Restoration?

For maximum results, three treatments are recommended every 4-6 weeks followed by maintenance treatments every 4-6 weeks. As new hair grows back, patients will gradually see fuller, thicker, and healthier hair. These results can be maintained nearly permanently with repeated treatments and at-home hair care.
