What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a medical-grade skin resurfacing treatment that uses a carefully selected blend of exfoliating acids — such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, and salicylic acid — to remove damaged outer layers of skin and stimulate the growth of new, healthier cells underneath.

The result? Visibly smoother texture, a more even complexion, and a refreshed, youthful glow.

Chemical peels are one of the most versatile skin treatments available, addressing a wide range of concerns across multiple depths:

  • Light (Superficial) Peels target the outermost layer of skin. They improve surface imperfections like dullness, dry skin, uneven tone, and fine lines — with minimal to no downtime. Often called a “lunchtime peel.”
  • Medium-Depth Peels penetrate through the surface layer into the upper dermis. They’re ideal for treating moderate wrinkles, acne scarring, and hyperpigmentation.
  • Deep Peels reach into the deeper dermal layers to address rough texture, deep wrinkles, significant scarring, and precancerous skin changes. These require more recovery time but deliver the most dramatic results.

What Can a Chemical Peel Treat?

Chemical peels may not be safe for patients with sensitive skin or those with an active acne breakout, skin infection, cold sores, or a history of keloid scarring. Women who are pregnant may also have to wait to receive treatment. If you are not a candidate for chemical peels, we can recommend a facial, injectables, or other cosmetic treatments.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

Most adults looking to improve their skin’s appearance and texture are good candidates for some level of chemical peel. The right peel depth and formula will depend on your skin type, concerns, and treatment history — something Dana will assess during your consultation.

Chemical peels may not be recommended if you:

  • Have an active acne breakout, skin infection, or cold sores at the time of treatment
  • Have a history of keloid scarring
  • Have very sensitive skin that reacts strongly to topical products
  • Are currently pregnant

Not sure if a chemical peel is right for you? Dana will walk you through your options — including HydraFacial, injectables, or other skin treatments that may be a better fit.

What to Expect During Your Chemical Peel at Thrive

Your treatment begins with a thorough skin assessment. Dana will select the appropriate peel solution based on your skin’s unique needs and apply it in a controlled, precise manner.

The process is straightforward:

  1. Skin Prep — The skin is gently cleansed to remove any oil, makeup, or product buildup.
  2. Peel Application — The customized chemical solution is applied evenly to the treatment area.
  3. Timed Processing — The solution works for a specific amount of time based on the peel depth and your skin’s response.
  4. Neutralization & Removal — The peel is carefully removed or neutralized to stop the exfoliation process.
  5. Soothing Finish — A calming moisturizer and SPF are applied to protect your freshly treated skin.

Most appointments take 30–60 minutes, depending on the peel type selected.

Recovery & Aftercare: What to Expect

Recovery varies based on peel depth:

  • Light Peel: Minimal redness; little to no peeling. Most patients return to normal activities the same day.
  • Medium Peel: Moderate peeling that gradually flakes off over 7–14 days. Some redness and tightness are expected.
  • Deep Peel: More significant redness, swelling, and peeling for several days. More downtime is required, but the results are long-lasting.

Aftercare tips to protect your results:

  • Skip exfoliating skincare products until skin has fully healed
  • Keep skin well moisturized
  • Avoid picking or peeling skin manually
  • Stay out of direct sunlight and wear SPF daily

How Long Do Chemical Peel Results Last?

Once your skin has healed, results typically last several weeks to a few months, depending on the peel depth and your skincare routine.

  • Light and medium peels can be repeated as needed to maintain results — many patients do a series for optimal outcomes.
  • Deep peels generally produce long-lasting results and typically do not need to be repeated.

Regular maintenance peels, combined with a consistent at-home skincare routine, can help extend and enhance your results over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are chemical peels safe for all skin types?

Chemical peels can be performed on a wide range of skin types, but the right peel formula matters. During your consultation at Thrive, Dana will evaluate your skin tone, sensitivity, and concerns to recommend the safest and most effective option for you.

How should I prepare for a chemical peel?

In the days leading up to your peel, avoid excessive sun exposure, tanning, retinol or exfoliating products, and waxing on the treatment area. Dana will provide personalized pre-treatment instructions at your consultation.

How many treatments will I need?

This depends on your goals and the peel type. Some patients see significant improvement after a single treatment, while others benefit from a series of lighter peels spaced a few weeks apart. Dana will build a customized plan around your skin goals.

Is a chemical peel painful?

Light and medium peels typically cause a mild tingling or warming sensation during application — most patients find it very tolerable. Deep peels may involve a topical numbing treatment for comfort.

Can I combine a chemical peel with other treatments?

Yes. Chemical peels can complement other treatments like HydraFacial or injectables. Dana will advise on the best sequencing and timing for any combination approach.
