What is Botox?

Botox injections are an FDA-approved neuromodulator – an injectable that uses a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin type A. Botulinum toxin injection temporarily paralyzes the facial muscles and prevents muscle contractions responsible for forming fine lines and wrinkles. These lines are called dynamic lines because they are formed from repeated facial movements like laughing, frowning, or smiling.

“I’ve been a patient of Dana’s for several years now, even following her when her practice locations changed.  Having seen a few different aesthetics providers, I can attest to both her professional skill and keen aesthetic eye.  Dana takes a great deal of time to understand my goals and designs specific treatment plans that will help me meet those goals.”

Who is a Candidate for Botox?

Most healthy men and women who want to treat or prevent wrinkles can benefit from Botox treatments as long as they do not have an allergy to botulinum toxin. Patients taking blood thinners or women who are pregnant will also have to wait to be treated with Botox or consider a different procedure. Dana Protomastro will discuss your medical conditions in detail with you at your consultation to determine whether Botox therapy is right for you.

Botulinum toxin injections can treat severe frown lines (glabellar lines) between the brows, crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, bunny lines on the nose, vertical forehead lines, and other facial wrinkles. They can also treat a variety of medical conditions, such as an overactive bladder (urinary incontinence), chronic migraine, cervical dystonia (neck pain), TMJ, and hyperhidrosis (excess sweating).

Botox Treatment

At the start of your treatment, Dana Protomastro will discuss your cosmetic concerns and goals to determine where your Botox cosmetic injections will be placed. Botox is administered with a fine-gauge needle, and most patients tolerate the injections well without any anesthetic. However, we can offer a topical numbing cream to make sure you are comfortable. The entire treatment takes 30 minutes or less, depending on how many injections you receive.

Treatment Areas for Botox

For Lips – Lips can often thin out as we age. Botox can relax the muscles in the upper lip, giving the appearance of a fuller upper lip.

For Frown Lines – The vertical lines between the eyebrows are a common sign of aging and occur with regular movement of the facial muscles. Botox temporarily relaxes the facial muscles and smoothes out frown lines.

For Hyperhidrosis – Excessive sweating can be an embarrassing problem for many people. Botox stops the nerve signals that activate the sweat glands, limiting or stopping sweat production.

For TMJ – Botox can relax the muscles around the jaw that can cause TMJ, relieving the pain and tension and making the symptoms much more manageable.

For Forehead Wrinkles – Forehead wrinkles are dynamic wrinkles that occur with repeated movements. Botox works to relax those muscles and smoothes out the wrinkles, leaving you with a younger-looking appearance.

For Crow’s Feet – Smiling, squinting, and expressing yourself with your eyes can often lead to crow’s feet. Luckily, the Botox formula allows the muscles around the eyes to relax, leading the crow’s feet to diminish in appearance.

For Under-eye Wrinkles – With repeated muscle movements, undereye wrinkles can show up as we age. Botox temporarily relaxes these muscles and stops them from contracting, allowing the wrinkles to diminish and smooth in.

For Smile Lines – Smile lines occur with repeated muscle movements (typically when smiling), but when Botox stops those muscles from contracting, the smile lines can soften, leaving you looking younger.

Recovery From Botox

Botox treatment requires minimal downtime and recovery. For 1-2 days, you should avoid direct heat, strenuous activity, and rubbing the injection site since mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness can occur. Exercise could also cause the product to shift, which can impact the look of your results. Ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers can help if you have any swelling or discomfort.
