WHAT ARE CHEMICAL PEELS?

Chemical peels are a skin exfoliating treatment that can be customized to each patient’s specific skin concerns and skin needs. This customization and the strength of a chemical peel are dependent on the chemicals used in the peel solution. Common ingredients used in chemical peels include salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, trichloroacetic acid, and carbolic acid (phenol). Different types of peels include:

  • Light chemical peels or superficial peels target the outer layer of the skin and can improve surface imperfections like fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone, sun-damaged skin, and dry skin.
  • Medium chemical peels remove the surface layer of the skin down to the upper part of the dermis. Medium peels treat wrinkles, acne scars, and uneven skin tone.
  • Deep chemical peels remove skin cells down into the dermal layer of the skin and are used to treat rough skin texture, deep scars and wrinkles, and precancerous skin growths.
